Artist Overview
Tony Marino is a pianist and composer known for original works that seamlessly blend jazz, Latin jazz, and world music influences. Respected for his melodic clarity and improvisational depth, Marino moves fluidly between musical traditions while maintaining a distinctive voice rooted in jazz harmony and storytelling.
Album Overview
In A Jam is a vibrant new album that marks a natural evolution in Tony Marino’s artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from Jamaican rhythms, personal experience, and lifelong mentorship, the album fuses reggae-influenced grooves with sophisticated jazz composition and improvisation.
Rather than imitating reggae traditions, Marino respectfully incorporates their rhythmic feel into his own compositional language—resulting in music that feels relaxed yet refined, playful yet purposeful. The album unfolds as a cohesive listening experience, inviting audiences into a world shaped by memory, movement, and melodic storytelling.
Inspiration & Concept
The roots of In A Jam trace back to Marino’s honeymoon in Jamaica, where the island’s rhythms, atmosphere, and laid-back spirit left a lasting impression. Years later, a simple but powerful suggestion from the late Rev. Earnest “Hoppy” Hopkins—Marino’s teacher, mentor, and dear friend—sparked the project into motion:
“People really like Jamaican rhythms. Why don’t you try writing a song using those rhythms?”
That encouragement led to Marino’s first reggae-influenced composition, “Let Me In,” followed by “Jamaican Rum,” “Montego Bay,” and the title track, “In A Jam.” These four pieces became the foundation for a larger creative vision.
To complete the album, Marino composed four additional works—“Booze Cruise,” “Morning Beach Walk,” “Dinner On The Beach,” and “Who Called The Cops”—each capturing a distinct scene or mood. Together, the eight tracks form musical snapshots that feel cinematic, personal, and richly textured.
